We know from cute pictures and videos that dogs love ice cream. But is ice cream really a harmless treat, or will it cause a stomachache? While it may be tempting to share your ice cream with your four-legged friend, it's best not to give ice cream to dogs.
Why dogs can't eat ice cream
The first problem with ice cream is that dog bodies are not designed to digest milk after being fed as puppies. Since ice cream is made with milk, feeding your dog ice cream can cause gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea or vomiting.
The second problem with ice cream is that it is loaded with sugar and feeding your dog sugary foods can lead to weight gain which can lead to other health problems. Even if the ice cream is sugar-free, be careful to read the label to make sure no xylitol is used, as this sweetener is extremely toxic to dogs.
The final problem with ice cream is that some flavors can be really dangerous for dogs. For example, chocolate can be toxic to dogs because their bodies cannot efficiently process a component of the chocolate:theobromine.
While not a major hazard when given in small amounts as a treat, for dogs with obesity, diabetes, allergies or dairy intolerance, ice cream can be a major problem. While some dog owners feed their dogs ice cream, we can't say it's a good dessert for dogs, especially if there are other options that aren't likely to cause digestive issues.
Alternatives to ice cream If you're looking to give your dog a summer treat, frozen yogurt might be a better choice. Because yogurt is fermented, it contains less lactose, making it easier for dogs to digest. Do not give your dog frozen iced yogurt, as it is full of sugar. Instead, buy an unsweetened yogurt and put it in the freezer at home. Be careful when giving it to your dog. While yogurt is easier for dogs to digest, not all dogs can tolerate it.
Another great summer treat for dogs is ice cream made from frozen fruit. You can easily prepare delicious ice creams at home with a food processor. This fruit-based dessert is safe for dogs to eat, and it actually offers some nutritional value.
