Last Saturday the Week of the Pet started. The week that is held throughout the country until Sunday 22 May is all about 'keeping the new pets'. In this week, organizer of the week, the LICG, draws attention to the fact that insights into keeping pets have changed. Some entrenched habits are no longer possible in 2016. Think, for example, of one rabbit in a small cage, training by punishment instead of rewarding, the slip chain as a correction tool, a goldfish in a bowl and one-sided or incorrect feeding of birds and reptiles.
A lot has changed in our view of animal keeping. For example, there are new training methods for dogs and new insights into purebred dog breeding to combat hereditary disorders. The chipping and registration of dogs is now mandatory, but the LICG also recommends chipping cats.
There is also much more international travel with animals. More and more dogs are allowed on holiday and many people want to help stray animals by bringing them to the Netherlands. Abroad, however, there are sometimes diseases that do not occur in our country and the risk of infection also increases. The LICG tells what people should pay attention to.
During the Week of the Pet, the LICG published an online magazine in which a number of aspects of 'the new pet keeping' are discussed.
