Growing up with a pet can bring social, emotional and educational benefits to children and adolescents, according to a recently published study. Young people with pets are more self-confident, less lonely and have better social skills. This research backs up claims that pets can help support healthy child development.
“Critical ages for the impact of companion animals on self-esteem appear to be greatest for children under 6 and adolescents and adolescents over 10. In general, dogs and cats are considered to be the best providers of social support, perhaps too due to a higher level of interaction compared to other pets,” says the lead author. “In both Western and non-Western cultures, pets can act as a form of psychological support, help young people feel good and enable a positive self-image.”
