Many people choose to take their pets with them on vacation. The plane may not be the ideal way to travel, but a car holiday can be ideal. So here are some tips to make sure that a red trip with your pets is a comfortable and safe trip for everyone.
1. Keep them safe and secure
While you're making a list of everything you'll need for your trip, don't forget to get a well-ventilated transport box. Whichever type you choose, make sure your pet is able to move, stand, and sit in it. If you can't find the right one for your needs, a pet seat belt is the best option.
2. Bring something familiar
Does your pet have a favorite blanket, toy or bed? It is ideal for carrying travel items for cats and dogs as it can relieve anxiety and provide a sense of familiarity.
3. Make sure your pet is comfortable during car journeys
If your pet is used to car rides, you probably shouldn't have any problems. However, if your pet is not used to driving, you should start by taking short car rides and then extend the ride a bit to get them familiar with the car. If your pet isn't used to the car, don't just assume everything is okay. Dogs and even cats can experience a lot of anxiety about something new like travel.
4. A short check at the vet won't hurt
Make sure your pet is physically healthy and ready for the trip with a quick vet check. Discuss the trip with your vet to ensure your pet has the right temperament and health status to handle a long journey and new environment.
5. Stop for breaks
If your pet is used to a normal walking and eating routine, plan your trip to allow for the same breaks. Feeding your pet in a moving vehicle isn't ideal, so make it a point to stop during normal eating times. Before you hit the road, check online and see where you can stop along the way for a possible dog walking area. This gives the dog a break to stretch his legs.
6. Make sure your pet keeps its head inside
While it's cute to see your dog stick his head out the window and get all the fresh air in, it's not safe. Oncoming traffic or flying objects can injure him. It is best for your dog to be in a pet seat belt or crate.
