If you own a pet, you are sometimes tempted to spoil your furry relative with a treat from your plate. But before you do that, you should think about that first. Several foods that are perfect for human consumption can be toxic to dogs and cats, sometimes causing serious and fatal medical problems. It was already known that chocolate and chocolate-based products are highly toxic. In a new review of studies, two animal health researchers have compiled a list of foods that are the most common culprits for your pet.
1. Onion, garlic, leek and chives.
2. Ethanol or ethyl alcohol which is in a variety of products, such as alcoholic beverages, paints and varnishes, medications, perfume, mouthwash, certain thermometers, and certain forms of antifreeze.
3. Grapes and their dried products (raisins and currants).
4. Hops, used for brewing beer.
5. Macadamia nuts.
6. Methylxanthines, including caffeine, theobromine and theophylline.
7. Xylitol, is mainly used as an artificial sweetener in many products, including sugar-free chewing gum, candy, bread, cookies and other baked goods.
