Every year, many pets accompany their families on vacation, and with summer approaching, we want to remind you that the key to safe travel for our furry family members is preparation. Below are some tips to ensure that dogs and cats are safe during the holidays.
* Pack a recent photo of your pet along with the current vaccination schedule. If your pet gets lost, having a photo will make it easier to find.
* Feed your pet a smaller meal before your trip to avoid stomach upset. Also remember to carry plenty of water with you to prevent dehydration and to give it regularly. If your pet has motion sickness, talk to your vet about medication that can help.
* Book a pet-friendly accommodation. In the Netherlands, but also abroad, there are various accommodations that allow pets. Do not forget that a surcharge often has to be paid for this. Don't assume that pets are allowed everywhere, and some accommodations put limits on the size of dogs they allow. Call ahead to check if your dog will be welcomed.
* If you travel by car, secure your dog in the car with a special car harness, so that your dog stays calm in the event of a sudden stop or accident.
* Never let your pet hang out the window. By opening the window just a few inches, your pet can safely enjoy the breeze without the risk of breathing in debris or being hit by objects. This also prevents any temptation from your pet to jump out of the car.
* Take one or two of your pet's toys with you when traveling. The familiar scents can comfort your pet and keep them entertained during the journey.
* Be extremely careful about leaving a pet in a car, even for a short period of time. Even if the windows are slightly open, the temperature inside a car can rise dramatically.
* Make sure your pet wears identification at all times in case he or she gets separated or gets lost. Make sure your pet's ID tag is up to date and includes your mobile number. And make sure the chip is registered:it can reunite you with your pet if the collar and tag are lost or removed, but only if you keep your details up to date.
Traveling with our pets can be fun, but it's important to take the right steps to make sure they're safe and comfortable. Visit the vet beforehand to confirm that your pet is in good health and that the vaccinations are up to date. If you are flying, ask your vet for an official pet health certificate which is sometimes required by airlines. Have a nice holiday!
